The History Boys!

By Pritha Sarkar
Taken from Reuters - Friday, June 25

LONDON - The embrace John Isner and Nicolas Mahut shared at the net said it all -- no words were needed to describe the longest ever tennis match after the American won 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon on Thursday.

A backhand passing shot from Isner at 1648 local time finally broke the three-day deadlock after a staggering 11 hours and five minutes on Court 18.

While Isner's weary legs buckled under him as he collapsed on to his back in disbelief, the fans occupying every inch of space in and around the court rose to their feet to give the heroes a prolonged standing ovation.

Every man, woman and child who had bagged one of the prized 782 seats on Court 18, or those who were craning their necks to see the action from a heaving Henman Hill knew they had been privileged to see something that happens only once in a lifetime.

"I am a little bit tired," an elated Isner, who could barely put one foot in front of the other when fading light stopped play at 59-all on Wednesday, said in an on-court interview.

"When you play a match like this with an atmosphere like this you don't feel tired. This crowd was fantastic. It stinks someone had to lose."

Isner completed an eye-watering 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-6 70-68 win -- and that was just to reach the second round.

No words could have consoled an utterly dejected Mahut, who had looked the fresher of the pair throughout the final set which alone lasted eight hours 11 minutes, as he slumped back into his courtside chair and covered his head with the green and purple Wimbledon towel.

The crowd tried to lift the Frenchman's sprits by rewarding him with the loudest cheers of the day and even a sweat-drenched Isner joined in the ovation.

"The guy is an absolute warrior. I want to share this day with him, it was an absolute honour," said Isner. "I wish him the best and see him somewhere down the road and it won't go 70-68."

It is a match that featured sinew stretching rallies, slam dunk smashes and countless angled winners but none of those will stand out as much as the 215 booming aces fired down by the duo -- with the 2.06 metre tall Isner shooting down 112 of them.

"We played the greatest match ever at the greatest place to play tennis. Wimbledon is the greatest tournament and we just played the greatest game ever," Mahut told the cheering crowd.

The combat reached such epic proportions, that the battling gladiators were breaking records with almost every shot they made during the course of the fifth set, which alone shattered the previous record of a complete match at six hours 33 minutes.

At one point it even looked like courtside scoreboard would run out of space if the match went on for much longer as neither Isner or Mahut got a sniff of a break point for the first 64 minutes on Thursday.

But within a blink of an eye it was all over.

Mahut hurled his wristbands into crowd the while one lucky fan leapt high into the air to catch Isner's baseball cap.

The sport's statisticians face an almighty rewrite of the record books after landmark upon landmark was shattered over three incredible days in a small corner of southwest London.

To pick just a few, Isner and Mahut shattered the records for the longest match, longest set, most games in a set at 138, most games in a match at 183 and most aces.

A high-five with a cheering John McEnroe, who sat through the entire 20 games contested on Thursday, completed an unforgettable day for Isner.

After being part of such a monumental duel, Isner and Mahut could not escape the arena without grabbing a picture for the family album.

Along with Swedish umpire Mohamed Lahyani, the trio stood proudly in front of the green scoreboard with their astonishing powers of endurance outlined in the glowing numbers 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-6 70-68.

Vesak Day Celebrations (Part III)

Post Vesak Day, 29th May 2010

After a "noisy" Vesak Eve and Day, I decided to spend some time alone. I drove to East Coast Park hoping to catch some people flying kites. No luck. Unfortunately I forgot that due to the recent oil spill, the beaches were not exactly friendly, not too mention there was a stench lingering in the air. Since I had driven there, might as well stay for a while=)

It was very pleasant with the sea breeze blowing gently onto my face and the sun shining brightly but not too violently onto Mother Earth. The clouds provide some beautiful sights too.

Reminded me of an erupting volcano=)

I did some reflection too. One of my resolutions this year is to recreate the life I am living. Having lived for over 30 years on Earth, I am not pleased with the way I am living it now. But alas! Changing my destiny is definitely hard with habits already grown roots and past Karma obstructing! Many times I have fallen... Nevertheless, I would carry on with courage for this is my goal in my life now=)

For those who are reading my blogs, I would be stopping for a while to restrategize and restructure (sounds very corporate haha). Cya!

Vesak Day Celebrations (Part II)

Vesak Day, 28th May 2010

As I slept at about 4am the "previous day", I woke up at 12+pm only:p A few of my Buddhist friends had arranged to catch up and roamed around Geylang for Buddhist celebration sights.

I decided to visit Wat Ananda Metyarama Thai Buddhist Temple at Jalan Bukit Merah prior to our meeting. This was the first temple in which I had my formal Buddhist lessons. The crowd was manageable when I arrived at about 4pm. I met one old friend from Wat Ananda who was still actively participating in their activities.

I was attempting to get a good picture of the temple compound when I saw Herry! haha. Our past karmic links had ripened!

Buddha figure under Bodhi Tree (One spot which I particularly like)

Buddha statue (Thai style) in main Shrine

Four-Face "Buddha" (The Four-Face "Buddha" or Hindu God of Creation, Brahma, played a very significant role in Thai Buddhism)

Buddha's Relics

I invited Herry to join me with my friends at Geylang. He agreed.

Reunion with old friends at Geylang

After dinner and some catching up (and lame jokes as usual haha), we went to the exhibition by Amitabha Buddhist Centre (ABC for short) next to Aljunied MRT station. ABC belongs to the Vajrayana tradition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibetan_Buddhism). I am not too familiar with this Buddhist tradition. It was also at this moment that our organiser decided to "abandon" us for a few meat buns hahah (personal joke!)

Below are some pictures taken at ABC's exhibition area:

Prayer Wheels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayer_wheel)

After we had finished looking at the exhibits and some deliberation on whether to call it a day or explore some other places, we finally decided to go to Burmese Buddhist Temple at Tai Gin Road. This was also where I had my first car accident=( It was a minor one though (heng!). The story went like this:

Being the blur (not familiar with the roads) and reckless driver I was, I kept making the wrong turns en route to Burmese Temple. At one occasion, I was changing lane from the utmost left to the utmost right (it was about 3 lanes). My attention was all over the place. I was talking and listening to my friends in the car and at the same time, I was changing lanes. As the distance to the utmost right lane was not exactly near, I stepped on the accelerator while checking my blind spot to make sure there were no cars coming from the back. Before I realised it, I was too near to the car in front and even though I stepped hard on the brakes, I could not avoid the fate of bumping slightly into it...

The other car's driver was not too pleased naturally and he complained aloud before proceeding to inspect his car. Fortunately there was not any significant damage and he decided to just let it go (phiew!). My car suffered a minor but obvious scratch at the front bumper.

I was really shocked by this incident and have since vowed to drive even more carefully!

After much "ostacles", we arrived at Burmese Buddhist Temple at about 8 or 9+pm. They were almost done with the packing of the decorations haha. There were still a handful of devotees doing their prayers. I particularly liked the figure of the Standing Buddha on the 3rd floor. We left shortly after for a drink at Novena Square. It was defintely a very fullfilling day!

For next year's Vesak though, I decide I would be a True Buddhist and diligently do my practice:p

Vesak Day Celebrations

Eve of Vesak Day, 27th May 2010

I decided to visit my favourite temple, Sri Lankaramaya (SL) at St Michael's Rd on the eve of Vesak Day. I was joined by my Malaysian Buddhist friend. Even though she has been working in Singapore for quite a while, it was her first time celebrating Vesak in Singapore.

We reached SL at about 9+pm. It was beautiful! Contrary to my original belief, the place was not too crowded. There were mainly the helpers preparing the place for the actual big day and devotees doing their usual chanting and offerings. The atmosphere was very tranquil and I liked it very much.

SL Tranquil Scene

Errr... Not sure what this is... Anyone can help:p

Buddhist Flags Decorations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_flag)

Reclining Buddha Shrine

Stupa at roof top of Main Shrine

Bodhi Tree (Widely believed that there are devas floating above)

Lanterns Decorations

A shot at being artistic:p

We were talking about another friend and presto, she "appeared" out of thin air. Never speak of the Mara:p

Then there is a lazy cat... haha:p

We helped an Indonesian Chinese, Herry take some pictures of him with the stupa. I mentioned him because he was to make an unexpected appearance on Vesak Day! Must be due to our past karmic links haha.

We left for Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, the largest Buddhist temple in Singapore at around 11pm. It belongs to the Mahayana Tradition. SL is of the Theravada Tradition. It was a sharp contrast to the scene at SL and was overflowing with people. The main event was the 3-Steps-1-Bow procession which devotees undertook to show their utmost respect and devotion on this most sacred occasion. They would queue for a couple of hours, followed by about 2 hrs of actual procession! There were also stalls selling and promoting Buddhist artefacts, wares, food, courses and events. I met quite a number of friends there:)

We decided to call it a day at around 1am but not before, we have a few bowls of free vegetarian noodles to fill our groaning stomaches:p

To Kill A Mockingbird...

I caught a local play To Kill A Mockingbird by Toy Factory Productions on last tuesday. I got the premium ticket at a good price using OCBC credit card (I realise there is usually a discount for local productions using OCBC credit card=) Unfortunately I could not find any kakis to accompany me. So as I sat there alone, I can't help feeling sian as the 2 seats to the left and right of me were occupied with a couple... hahah=P But the performance more than make up for it!=)

I first got in touch with this book through my secondary days. English literature text in secondary 2. Ganna forced to read hahha. As I continued reading the book as part of my curriculum, I found it to be very good and was mesmerised by it! Here is a synopsis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird

Surprising I could remember how the story unfolded in the next scene as the play progressed after so many years! (must be a result of reading it too many times for examination during secondary 2 haha) The props were minimal with chairs being the main ones!!! haha. Maybe the director does not want the audience to be distracted by fancy props and missed the morals of the story.

Another interesting thing was one of the main actors fell sick suddenly and a replacement actor was tasked with his job. Obviously as it was a last minute arrangement, the replacement actor did not have the time ti memorise the script. So it looked really weird when he was reading from the script hahah.

As the play neared the end with Boo Radley, the mysterious character in the story appearing to save the day, my eyes started to tear slightly. I was not sure of the reasons. Maybe because it brought back nolstagic memories. Maybe because of the strong morals of the story. Maybe.....=)

Toastmasters Competent Communicator Project 1: The Ice Breaker

I did my first speech on friday. I was to introduce myself to the club so they might know me better=) The main objectives of Project 1 are to begin speaking before an audience and to discover speaking skills I already have & skills that need attention.

I finished preparing my speech only the nite before the actual presentation day! Spent abt 2hrs+ at NUS racking my brains... I wasn't satisfied with the final piece but what could one expect from last min work haha... I read thru the speech to make sure it met the min time designated (the time given is 4-6mins) and as it was already quite late, I decided to practise more tomorrow. Unfortunately while I planned to practise for at least 1.5hrs, I end up with only half an hr after I finished the day's other important activities. You can imagine the stress I'm going thru... haha

Judgement time.

I started off the speech quite well but I must admit it didn't quite fulfill my expectation of the audience's response at my initial ice-breaker joke ie the 2 main purposes. I suspected that affect me a bit and coupled with the fact that I wasn't very familiar with the content of my speech, my presentation started to quiver. The link from one point to another wasn't obvious and strong. As I could not link smoothly (I need to refer to my cue cards a few times), I started to get nervous and all the forbidden words like "Er" and "Ah" came out, though I was aware and tried to limit theri existence.

Evaluation time.

My evaluator who was both a Competent Communicator and Leader (accolades of mastery in TM) congratulated me on fulfilling the objectives of Project 1. She found my speech to be loud, audible and humourous. Unfortunately there were some signs of nervousness as I was swaying slighty. My organization and linkage of my speech needs to be improved as mentioned above. She also commented on using smaller cue cards (I really laugh at this one haha).

So Ladies & Gentlemen, presenting the very raw form of my script. Enjoy!

"Good evening, Toastmaster of the Evening, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Tonight I would like you to know a little bit more about me and in the process, I hope to achieve 2 main purposes:

Purpose Number One: All the single and available girls in this room would find me likeable and not reject me when I ask you for your mobile number.
And Purpose Number Two: All the eligible bachelors in this room would take pity on me and not vie with me for the girls!

Yes, this is one characteristics of me. I would really like to crack jokes as I feel it lightens up the atmosphere and helps to break the ice. Speaking of ice which has the characteristics of being cold, how about this one? Why does Mr A throw the clock out of the window? Because he wants to see Time Flies… Very cold… This is a cold joke.

But more often than not, most people would know me as the friendly introvert who don’t talk much and always end up as a listener in a conversation. Someone who would be contented just to indulge in musical plays and nostalgic music. I think this could be due partly to my religion, Buddhism which asks us to look inward more than outward.

I started practising Buddhism when I left junior college. Well…You know… The time when a hot-blooded teenage guy is looking for answers to his problems and life. However the more significant event in my spiritual path was when I ordained as a novice monk in Malaysia after I graduated from university. I shaved off my hair. For your information. My hair was not this short when I first graduated from university. My fringe reached my jaw literally and I looked just like any gangster from the movie Young and Dangerous. But like what my friend likes to say I am a kind-hearted gangster. Coming back, besides shaving my hair, I also have to don the saffron robes representative of a disciple of the Buddha. Life is very simple. No American Idol, no Jay Chou. Wake up at 430am in the morning and sleep at 10pm. Eat 2 meals a day before noon time. The rest is all cultivation, mainly in the form of formal meditation and mindfulness in whatever I am doing. Well… I sort of miss those days really…

However there is another side to me; one part which cannot sit still and constantly want to try new things. To challenge and improve myself. Take for example: I joined NUS Rovers in my final year to attempt to scale the highest peak in West Malaysia: Gunung Tahan. As the mountain name implies, you really must be able to tahan the steep ascent up the mountain. It was really challenging both physically and mentally but also lots of fun! And through the process, I came to enjoy a short fame in NUS Rover as “The guy with 2 underwears”. In view that some of you may be underage, it would be best that I don’t reveal much here…

Another more recent incident was to go racing in Pasir Gudan, Johor with my friends and I almostcould not make it back! The story went like this: after a few rounds driving as if I am on Singapore expressway ie 90km/hr, I imagined myself to be Michael Schumichael and stepped on the accelerator like petrol is really cheap in Singapore! Unfortunately I did not brake enough at a turn and my car literally flew off the track and into the sand pits! Fortunatey my car did not overturn but my new car had sustainable scratches on the right side which cost me a few hundred bucks to repair. At those few moments, my breathing really stopped.

I am currently working as a financial planner with an independent financial advisory company for about 6 years. The job encompasses some of the characterisitics which are in line with my attributes as mentioned above. Challenging: Sales is definitely not my cup of tea as an introvert. What more I need to start with zero income and slowly build it up to reach the level a graduate would earn for a entry level job in society. But it was also balanced nicely with attribute that I like to help people.

And the latest addition to my challenge list is to conquer NUS Alumni Toastmasters;P

Ladies and Gentlemen, let us recap our main purposes for this session in case u‘ve forgotten:
Purpose No 1: Ladies, do not recall my request for yr mobile no when approached.
Purpose No 2: Gentlemen, help yr poor brother here!"

And here is recognition of completing Project 1.

With more preparation, I'm going to ace Project 2!;)

Reunion of the Primary School Gang (for CNY)!

Today 6 classmates from 6/1 of Clementi Town Primary School (no longer in pure existence as it has since merged with Clementi North Pri Sch to become Clementi Pri Sch) converged at each other's house after donkey years (actually only a couple of years lah haha) to pay CNY respects to each other haha.

We were supposed to meet at my house at 1030am but all came late! Some by 30 mins! What is this?!! Obviously their bad habit of inpunctuality has not changed over the years! Haha. Franly speaking, I think I'd be late too if it were to start at another person's house but too bad, I was the organiser today! What I said count!

Finally we could settle down after all the bickerings and lame jokes (we still use the SAME old lame jokes after all these years!) for a group photo at my place.

After that, we proceed to walk 2 blocks to my best friend's, Stanley's, place. He has recently moved to Tampines with his wife. Next month would be his new home's house warming and we look forward to it to have another round of his lame jokes (yes, same ones again! haha). Below is the pic taken at his parents' place. He's the chubby guy at top right;p

Finally the last stop in Clementi before we headed off North to Choa Chu Kang area. This was the first time we went to Soo Yean's home to bai nian as he rejoined our gang only a couple of years back after MIA for so long. We played Wii Tennis at his place and were relunctant to go as we'd great fun. Soo Yean was the only guy who played by the rules of CNY ie he wore red! haha.

Oh! And this was me doing a Roger Federer's forehand! hahahha

Next we were off to CCK. The journey was uneventful with Weimin deciding to take the Jurong East route while I followed behind Guoxiong's car via Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The only real "excitement" was when some inconsiderate driver cut in Guoxiong's lane unexpectly and he was forced to brake hard. As I was following closely behind, I reacted instinctively and narrowly missed kissing his backside!! haha

We arrived safely at Guoxiong's house after that and continued our gaming experience with PSP2 Winning Eleven. Weimin still led the pack, followed closely by Stanley. Below pic was taken using my faithful camera's timer function as GX's parents left for another appt:

And I secretly took their personal photos while they were too engrossed in the game! heehee

WM: I'm getting sleepy from winning too many easy matches...

GX: This is boring match! No fight at all... Zzzzz

SH: I think u shld move yr player to the left...

Peggy: I cant understand why guys love soccer so much!

Stan: Scoreee.........

And the guys got the stupid idea to skip lunch and so we ended up immediately at Peggy's house. Peggy was the only female member of our gang and a very pretty one hehee. We continued with more Wii at her place. This time was bowling though. Her dad was waiting to challenge us all! And we had a good thrashing by him (should have known better to challenge him...) Ok, the defeat photo...

Damn! I was last (I think) but at least crossed the 100 points mark hee (just only hahha)

Group photo at Peggy's house:

After a few more rounds, we decided to throw in the towel to Uncle. Last stop, Weimin's house. Peggy got to go for a casting and would meet us at WM's place directly (She told us it'd take 5 mins only but end up more than 1-2hrs! Lucky we din follow her! haha)

More PSP2 at WM place. This time is car racing.

By this time, I was hungry like mad! We ordered pizza hut and I really fested! No group photo was taken at WM place as Stan left early to go home sweet home for dinner with his wife.

It was a most joyous and tiring and hungry=( day but it was worth it!

Looking forward to next year!;)
